ORCA Hosts Wilderness Exploration Summer Camp Published: 06/02/2011 14:40:00 Next week holds a unique youth summer camp opportunity in Juneau, it's the first of its kind and will be a lot of fun for everybody involved, and one of the best things about it is that everybody CAN get involved because it's being held by ORCA , they're a part of Southeast Alaska Independent Living, an organization dedicated to inspiring personal independence for people with disabilities. We spoke with Tristan Knutson-Lombardo, the Juneau ORCA Team Leader, who told us more about ORCA and the summer camp. "ORCA provides recreation opportunities for people with disabilities, so all ages youth through adult and all types of disabilities. But what's unique about this camp is that we're opening up to all youth so whether you have a disability or not you're more than welcome to join this camp or any of our camps this summer. So we'll do some animal tracking so whether we're either looking for tracks in the ground or the dirt, maybe we're feeling for things where animals have been,maybe picking up scraps of food or things like that, smelling, those kind of things. We'll also be going out and doing some animal sightings, so trying to see if we can spot any animals or what kind of animals we see. We'll also being doing just some general exploration, going out to a low tide, maybe out to Shaman Island out north Douglas there when it's real low to kind of explore and just take our time. If you do have a disability we make it accessible, so whether you use a wheelchair or have a mobility or sight impairment, we just make sure that everybody can participate evenly and fully with the group; but you don't have to have a disability to participate in these summer camps." The camp runs Monday through Friday next week from noon till around 4 or 4:30, and transportation can be arranged if needed.
