Last Tuesday was November 13th, seventy years to the day after our Capital City's namesake; The USS Juneau, was lost in the battle of Guadalcanal. A memorial to that vessel, and the lives lost upon it, now stands in a new location along Juneau's waterfront, and was rededicated on the anniversary of that fateful day.
"Just as the original memorial honored the crew of the USS Juneau, we hope this new memorial will continue to remind the citizens of Juneau and our many visitors of the sacrifice that was made to keep our country strong and free."
Port Engineer Gary Gillette
"Seventy years ago today the sailors on the USS Juneau and the other ships that were in the area of operations fought the naval battle of their lives. The battle of Guadalcanal was one of the most ferocious naval conflicts of WWII, and is said to be the turning point of the war. Today we commemorate the great sailors on the USS Juneau, and their ultimate dedication to our country and the Navy core values of honor, commitment and courage. They gave their all, so that we can continue to live the lives that we live today."
Petty Officer Gregory Cazemier Jr. USN
