JDU to perform with Weber Dance
Published: 06/20/2013 12:15:00
Since 1975, Juneau Dance Unlimited has been holding workshops, teaching dance and dazzling Juneau audiences with powerful performances. They offer professional dance training from both local and guest instructors in a wide variety of styles, lending a broad diversity to Juneau's performing arts community, and launching some of their brightest young stars out into the world to dance professionally with nationally known companies. One of those companies, Weber Dance of Boston, has been lending their expertise to the program for a number of years and is back once again to teach, and to dance. Jody Weber, the Artistic Director for Weber Dance, filled us in on the collaboration and an upcoming performance.

"Weber Dance is here working with Juneau Dance Unlimited and it is our sixth year here; we're very excited to be back. We're setting work on the teens, who are working behind me right now; they'll be doing four different pieces in our performance. Weber Dance is a professional company from Boston so we've been working with the teens on Ballet, Modern Dance, Choreography, Broadway Dance, Hip Hop, a whole variety of styles. And the professional company will also be performing in the show on Friday evening. We brought a whole array of pieces, some of them are straight forward dance pieces, others include storytelling and we even brought a piece with some gorgeous masks made by a professional mask maker in Boston.

We definitely are presenting an array of styles on Friday evening but our company is a modern dance company so that is the main form that we work in in terms of our own choreography and performance so I would say that's the focus of the evening.

I can tell you as an artist visiting from another community that they have just an excellent, high quality program going here in dance and we're always thrilled when we connect with other programs like that around the country."

The performance begins at 7 o'clock tomorrow at Thunder Mountain High School and will feature works by both Weber Dance and the students from Juneau Dance Unlimited.
